What in the world?

This morning the kids and I were in the kitchen, minding our own business when we heard our dog, Santy, outside. He was frantic. He was whining, crying, jumping on the door, scratching on the door, begging to be let in. He doesn't usually do that unless he gets caught in a sudden downpour.

"Something's wrong," I said. I looked all around the yard for a person or animal who might be there scaring him.

Suddenly, Christian yelled, "LOOK! A hot air balloon!" I had somehow missed the ginormous hot air balloon landing practically in my back yard:

Yes, Santy, that was terrifying.

Yesterday

Yesterday morning was normal enough. I got up, took a shower and Roxie and I ran off to the beauty supply store to pick something up before Doug had to go to work. (One tag-a-long is much easier than four.) While I was there, Doug called me and said that the carbon monoxide detector had gone off and not to be surprised and worried if there was a fire truck in front of our house when I got home. That was probably a smart call.

Apparently, Doug had gotten in the shower and the alarm went off. He asked the kids if there was smoke anywhere (he thought it was the smoke detecter.) They said no, so he had to get out of the shower to investigate. It was the carbon monoxide detector. He checked to see if it was just telling us to replace the batteries and when he realized that it was not, he told the kids to get out of the house. At some point, he got dressed. I don't know when, but I don't want you to worry your pretty little heads about him being naked in the front yard. I digress. Anyway, he called the fire department and they sent some firefighters over to check and sure enough, there was carbon monoxide in our house. You might think the kids would be worried or afraid. Yes, they were terrified. What? They don't look it? Hmm... Maybe it had something to do with being allowed to use a real fire truck as their personal jungle gym. Oh, and an ambulance came, too, but we were healthy as horses, so they left. (Doug started feeling sick later and had to go to the ER, but is feeling fine now.)

The fire department called the gas company and they sent someone over with more sensitive equipment to find the source. It turns out it was the water heater. Apparently the carbon monoxide had just been building up in the basement. The gas company man said that we had been lucky. If things hadn't happened the way they had, the levels were high enough in the water heater that we could have gone to sleep and never woken up. We know that we were watched over and blessed and we are so grateful.

A Not-So-Welcome Surprise

Last week, we went for a hike in the canyon.
It was lovely.
Everything was in bloom.
The sky was blue.
The kids climbed everything they could.
Spring was here.

Emphasis on the word was.

This is what we woke up to yesterday:
MAY TWENTY-FOURTH.
(This is a picture of some sort of snow sculpture of Christian's, in case you wondered.)

Mother nature and I are not on speaking terms because of this last stunt. If the "forecasters" are right, I may forgive her later this week. I'll let you know.

Happy Birthday, Doug!

Today is Doug's birthday!
Just a few words about Doug. I love that guy. He is hard working, loving, good, honest and tall. (Hey, I like tall ones!) I think the most remarkable thing about him is not only that he loves me in spite of me, but the way he loves me. He has never, to my knowledge, said an unkind thing about me. In fact, I have been told by the people with whom he associates how he does talk about me. "Reverence" was a word that was used recently. He supports me in all my, shall we say, uniqueness. It can't be easy. He is an involved dad. He loves his kids with his whole heart. They love him, too. I'm getting weepy, so I think I'll stop now.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, DOUG!

Talent Show

We had a talent show at church Saturday night after our library fun. When Ashton and Christian had said that they wanted to participate, Roxie burst into tears and wailed, "Why do I not get to do something?"
MOM: "Do you want to do something?"
ROXIE: "YES!"
MOM: "What do you want to do?"
ROXIE: "Play the piano."
MOM: "How about sing?"
ROXIE: (Perking up) "Yes! I want to sing 'How Firm a Foundation'!"
And that was that.
So, without further ado, here are my talented kids:

Library Fun

On Saturday, we went to the library for the Children's Book Festival. Oh, yeah. If you know me, you know I love that stuff. We met some very famous people (I use the term loosely):

Clifford the Big Red Dog
Curious George
And a Wild Thing
My princess was a smidge nervous.

Plus, we met a few others like Brandon Sanderson (who wrote the genius Alcatraz books).

And what fun is all this without face painting?
We wouldn't know. We must not forget the crafts, crowds, and sweat. Also the authors of Babymouse were there. I never knew about Babymouse. Apparently I'm the only one on earth. But, now I know. And so do you.
